“You look like shit.”

“Thanks, Jillian,” I say, words slightly slurred.

“Are you sick?”

I shake my head and reach for the coffee. “I didn’t sleep last night. Like at all.”

“Go sit. I’ll get you coffee.”

My feet shuffle across the break room and I fall into a chair, folding my arms on the table to rest my head on. I listen to people milling about, cursing them for the sleep they got last night. My phone buzzes from inside my purse. I pull it out, blinking a few times to get my eyes to focus so I can read the text.

Luke: I had a great time last night, even though it didn’t end up with you naked.

Me: Next time, promise ;-) and I had a great time too. I’m surprised you’re up already.

Luke: A certain someone was on my mind and I couldn’t sleep. How’s work going?

Me: Just getting started, but it’s going to be a long day. I didn’t get much sleep last night, which is always fun.

I send the text, then worry I’m coming off as too whiny. Though at this moment, I’m too exhausted to care. And I do get whiny when I’m tired.

Luke: Is everything okay?

Me: Yeah. Just busy with work then Paige didn’t sleep well. She’s going through a nightmare phase and wakes up a lot at night and I can’t get her back to sleep.

Luke: I’m heading out to the gym in a while. Want me to bring you coffee? I’ll tell the barista we have a Freddie Kruger situation going on and ask for double shots of espresso.

His words bring an instant smile to my face, and a familiar flutter passes through me. It’s familiar, yet hasn’t been felt in a long time. Before I can answer, Jillian comes over, handing me my coffee.

“Here ya go.” She sits next to me, adding no-calorie sweetener into her own coffee. “Was this a result of your date last night?”

“I wish, but no.” How the hell was I able to pull all-nighters in college? Since when did I get so old? “It was the result of poor time management, working all night, then what most likely was a demonic spirit in my house. It knocked on the door at three AM and then woke Paige up.”

“Someone knocked on your door at three in the morning?”

“Maybe. I heard a noise, and Pluto barked. It freaked me out too much to sleep, so I sat in the hallway guarding the girls until I dozed off, then Paige woke up saying the man was watching her sleep again.”

“I’ve been saying you need to get that place blessed,” Jillian quips. “But for real…you look rough, Lex.”

“I’m okay,” I say and bring my coffee to my lips. “I’ll go to bed right after the girls do tonight and then I’ll be back to normal.”

She nods, not convinced. “How was the date?”

“Really good. We get along really well, like more than I’ve gotten along with any guy before. Is that weird? Shouldn’t the beginning of
